Nikki Beach – St. Tropez, France

Route de L’epi
83350 St. Tropez, Ramatuelle, France •

Nikki Beach’s scene is the most exuberantly youthful and certainly à la mode at the moment. Naomi Campbell celebrated her birthday here last year and opened it up for the public who soon followed in droves. It is part of a chain, the original Nikki Beach is in Miami and they have opened others and are planning to open in Egypt and will launch one in Koh Samui, Thailand at Lipa Noi Beach in December. The thought that Voile Rouge failed in importing their brand of St. Tropez to Miami and yet Nikki Beach succeeded in bringing Miami to St. Tropez is a revolting reality.
The St Tropez branch is a series of split-level decking areas, which surround an enormous swimming pool. The show in the daytime at Nikki Beach reminds one of a disco with booming, loud music but the young
crowd here is visibly enjoying it. At night, it is a candlelit wonderland.
To obtain a place on one of the large white cotton mattresses that are lined up around the pool, you are obliged to consistently order bottles of Champagne. This is ridiculous, gauche, and most assuredly a sign of neurotic, nouveau riche insecurity, and the following incident gives definite proof. One tasteless, wasteful mat-squatter within a two hour period ordered about 100 bottles of Roederer Cristal Champagne just so that he could spew them into the pool with, I suppose, the odd tipple now and again.

Mont Saint Michel, France

Mont Saint Michel, France
Mont Saint Michel, France
Mont-Saint-Michel is one of France's great wonders, it is a small tidal island situated just 1km off the Normandy coast close to the border with Brittany and connected by a small causeway. The rocky islet is made up of a mediaeval town and topped by the 13th century Benedictine abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel.

Mont Saint Michel, France
To access the town visitors pass through two gates, the Boulevard Gate and then the Kings Gate complete with its own portcullis. Mont-Saint-Michel has just one main street which is cobbled and spirals steeply upwards until it reaches the abbey. Along the way there are plenty of museums, souvenir shops and cafes to pause in as well as some stunning 15th and 16th century architecture.

Once you reach the top it's time to explore the abbey itself which is accessed by a steep and narrow stairway. After visiting the abbey you should take some time and your camera to stroll around the ramparts at the top of the mount as there are some really beautiful views across the bay.
Mont Saint Michel, France
History
There has been an abbey at the top of Mont-Saint-Michel since sometime in 708. According to legend St Aubert the Bishop of Avranches saw several visions of Saint Michael the Archangel who ordered him to build a church on the mount. Apparently the bishop ignored Saint's repeated requests until finally the Archangel burned a hole in the bishops skull with his finger. This was more than enough persuasion for the poor bishop and he immediately began construction of the abbey.

Tides
The bay of Mont-Saint-Michel has some of the fastest strongest tides in Europe with a high water height of around 12 metres. They were described by the French author Victor Hugo as "à la vitesse d'un cheval au galop" meaning they are as swift as a galloping horse. Do not wander around on the sands in the bay as it is extremely dangerous and you could easily be caught out by the tide.

Many visitors come to Mont-Saint-Michel to watch this tidal phenomenon which is at its most impressive on a spring tide, if you want to witness its swiftness you'll need to visit Mont-Saint-Michel 2 hours before a spring tide which occurs between 36 - 48 hours after the full and new moons.

UNESCO
Mont-Saint-Michel was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1979, it is very popular with both tourists and pilgrims alike and receives over half a million visitors each year.

Parking
Access to Mont-Saint-Michel is by foot, there is a main car park before the causeway which costs around 4€ a day for a car, 1€ for motorbikes and around 8€ for campervans.

Colmar, France

Colmar, France
Colmar, France
Colmar is a town in the Haut-Rhin department to the south of the Alsace region, in north-eastern France.
For Georges Duhamel (as he wrote in 1931), Colmar was the “most beautiful town in the world”. It has also often been said that it is the most Alsatian town in Alsace! Without going over the top with superlatives, Colmar undoubtedly remains an exceptional town due to the wealth and variety of its historical and architectural heritage.
The capital of central Alsace, situated near Germany and Switzerland between the Vosges and the Rhine, Strasbourg and Mulhouse, the town offers visitors an exciting glimpse of 1000 years of European history.
Besides, with its 67,000 inhabitants, Colmar retains a ‘country town’ atmosphere which contributes so much to its charm. Wonderfully preserved from the ravages of time, its homogenous historical centre is classed as a ‘protected area’ and has benefited from careful restoration and ongoing improvements for more than 20 years.

Huahine, French Polynesia

Huahine, French Polynesia
Huahine, French Polynesia
Huahine is an island located in French Polynesia, an overseas territory of France in the Pacific Ocean.
Huahine is for sure the wildest and most secretive island of the Society Islands thanks to its luxuriant nature and its past full of myths and legends. Located 30 minutes away from Tahiti by plane, it is also the nearest one from the main island of this archipelago. Huahine would draw its name from hua, sex/gender and hine, woman. It is said that this name would refer to a pregnant woman. Furthermore, some think that the Tavaiura Mount looks like a lying woman face with a roundness belly. Formerly, the island was called Matairea which means « cheerful breeze ». At his time, Captain Cook named it « hermosa » which means « beautiful ». This island appears like a feminine and attractive island whose inhabitants are proud of.

Huahine, French Polynesia
Huahine is composed by two islands: Huahine Nui (big Huahine) in the North and Huahine Iti (small Huahine) in the South separated by a narrow channel. Both offer a luxuriant vegetation, white sandy beaches, small coves hidden from the eyes, coral desert islets, a lagoon with turquoise colours and much diversified food and fruit-producing cultivation.
A real haven of peace where calm and quiet reign. Moreover, the local population is friendly and welcoming.
Huahine, French Polynesia
Huahine can also pride itself on possessing one of the widest and best preserved archaeological site of the Society Islands: the Maeva marae, a whole of several important marae (sacrifices sites for gods) located at the bottom of the Mouatapu Mount and near the Fauna Nui laguna. Legends hang over this island lusted after by Hiro, god of thieves, and adopted by artists.
The island has much more touristic and cultural interests such as the local craft industry, fish parks, authentic fishermen villages, the visit to the sacred eels of Faaie or nice walks in magnificent gardens for the lovers of exotic plants and flowers.

On the lagoon side, surfers will enjoy the island as it offers excellent surf sites. Divers can discover as their please the underwater wildlife (falling coral, caves full of fish, coral gardens…). Finally, several lagoon excursions are proposed by the nautical activities providers.
Every year in October, the Hawaiki Nui Va’a race, which is the biggest canoe race of the South Pacific, starts from Huahine.
